Via Andrea Hicks: We had a great legal education session yesterday with Ashley Boles, 2nd Judicial District Juvenile Division Supervisor. Ashley was not only entertaining but he also taught us about the juvenile court structure and the problems their office handles.

The juvenile officers are county employees with an income supplement of 50% from the State. This results in each juvenile office operating differently. They are working towards standardization in the juvenile offices.

Juveniles that commit traffic offenses, underage DUI or Game & Fish violation are tried in District Court. Family in Need of Services (FINS) petitions are reported to the juvenile office. This includes non-criminal matters such as truancy, runaways, unruly kids, and children under the age of 10 that commit a crime, etc. Anyone can file a FINS petition with the juvenile office. Delinquency cases are juveniles age 10 to 18 that commit a crime. The penalties will vary depending on the circumstances of the juvenile. All juveniles will undergo a mental health assessment. Juveniles age 16 or above that commit a felony can be tried as an adult in Circuit Court.

Ashley also showed us the drugs and paraphernalia that have been confiscated from juveniles.

AALS Winter Meeting Registrations are due by December 30 to Janet Gordon, PLS.

The AALS Winter Business Meeting will be held January 9-10, 2009 in Hot Springs at the Velda Rose Hotel.

Legal Ed Lunch will be held on January 29, 2009. Our speaker for January will be Detective Earnest Ward of the Jonesboro Police Department, who will be doing a presentation on “Internet Investigations of Sexual Pedophiles” during the lunch hour on THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2009.

Erma Brady, PLS has asked Kim Cooksey, PLS, BSN, RN to be our speaker for October. She will be presenting “Advice for Beginners” which will be very good for our newer members and a refresher course for us older members!

Kim Chrisco’s boss, Brant Perkins, will be speaking to us on Tuesday, September 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Courthouse Annex 4th Floor Jury Room on Estate Planning & Corporate Entities.

We will be having our regular monthly meeting that day at noon, and legal ed in the evening this month.

The next Legal Ed will be presented by Ron Hunter. Charlie Patterson will host at her home located at 703 James Street in Harrisburg. Click here to see directions from courthouse to Charlie’s house.

A planning meeting for the Anniversary Celebration will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2007, at 5:15pm in the jury room at the courthouse annex. BE THERE if you want to have an input on what activities we will be having at the celebration.

Thursday, June 14 is the date of the next legal ed lunch which will be held in the jury room on the 4th floor of the Courthouse Annex. Sharon Davis, PLS, will do a presentation on New Rules & Regulations for Notaries Public. Please contact Joyce Morgan regarding the June Legal Ed Brown Bag Lunch.
